In Honor of the Fourth ...

and because I have nothing interesting to say for myself:

You Are a Smart American

You know a lot about US history, and you're opinions are probably well informed.
Congratulations on bucking stereotypes. Now go show some foreigners how smart Americans can be.

You Passed the US Citizenship Test

Congratulations - you got 10 out of 10 correct!

BTW, so long as you're aware that in 1776 we were not attempting to extricate ourselves from the oppressive Imperialism of either Spain or Germany - you too can pass these tests ;)

I think us foreigners would be more impressed if Americans showed some knowledge of things *outside* the US. For example by not saying that the American Revolution was a war against 'England'. It was against (the Kingdom of) Great Britain, which includes both England and Scotland.

Although I'm one to talk, I failed both tests.

:-P

Hi Pacian – thanks for stopping by, I love your blog :)

I could say something glib and acerbic here about the test referring to GB simply as England because it's really only the English who made the trouble (as usual) ... but I won't because all my dead English ancestors will rise up and become voices in my closet tonight if I do.

Of course, if I don’t, all my dead Celtic ancestors will rise up to haunt me just as much, if not more .. hmm, that’s a serious dilemma ;P

Oh well, I guess I’m getting haunted either way.

But honestly, I think it's just a vernacular thing - like most people referring to The Netherlands as Holland.

That, and that fact that most Americans suck at geography, world history, and anything not involving Paris Hilton :)

BTW, if my old friend V should happen to read this, please feel free to chime in and we can have one of those lovely debates we used to have where you insisted my country only got it’s independence by way of the fact that your country’s King was mad … I miss those discussions .. you're so fun when you're wrong ;P
